Reminders will be automatically sent out depending on what reminders you have set for a specific event.

To disable event reminder sounds (a dialog with reminder will still pop up), go to the Edit menu > Preferences. Then go to the "Calendars" tab and click on the "Reminders" sub-category tab. Uncheck the "Play a sound" box, then click on Close on the bottom right. (Your settings in this window are automatically applied.)

If you want the today view (on the right hand side) and it disappeared (or you want to remove it from your view), click on "View" menu > Today Pane > Show Today Pane, or press the keyboard shortcut F11 (or whatever else was there) while in the Thunderbird window.
